These defectors publicly accused TMC leadership of undemocratic working styles and corruption, which made for news stories that were widely publicized and debated in the local and national media.The TMC has been in power in West Bengal since 2011. In early February 2021, Mamata Banerjee, the founding leader of TMC, had to urgently take steps to maintain the morale of her grassroots-level party workers to retain their allegiance to the party in the face of sustained BJP provocations to defect. Students are asked to suggest the way forward for Mamata Banerjee. Questions students will consider include: Should she proactively talk to potential dissenters, allow them to leave the party without efforts to retain their loyalty or actively identify and purge dissenters? What and how should she communicate with the loyal party members? |
