Description
Summary:Eugenics is the study of how to arrange reproduction within a human population to increase the occurrence of heritable traits regarded as desirable. The reemergence of eugenics, with all the tools that were once only found in the recesses of the minds of a few science fiction writers, has unleashed on the world yet again an entire roster of questions on how to effectively manage the application of these scientific insights. Against the historical backdrop of the horrors of Nazi concentration camps dedicated to a carrying out a genocidal plan, there has been a burst of breakthroughs in biological science that promise to make the world a better place through severely limiting the spread of inherited diseases. As with seemingly every kind of technology, its use carries benefits and costs that must be carefully considered. There are easier cases and more difficult ones that demand our attention. Students will be asked to first consider whether the growing list of eugenic applications can be safely pursued or whether these discoveries present intolerable risks and violations of ethical boundaries. Second, assuming that answer allows for us to proceed, the question pivots to what kinds of regulations are necessary to ensure humanity can prevent the technology from being used for malicious purposes.
