The new king, Claudius, has come to the throne of Denmark upon the sudden death of his brother. Hamlet, son of the dead king, faces tough decisions about how to react to the change of leadership and its effects on the country. Hamlet and other individuals in the Danish court make choices about how to react to the changing circumstances, often choosing unethical options that lead to the breakdown of the kingdom as well as suffering for its leaders. Students will be asked to describe several different models for ethical decision-making and use these models to evaluate the ethics of decisions made by characters in Hamlet, explain how individuals can use ethical frameworks to make effective decisions, and articulate the value of ethical models for effective decision-making.
