| Summary: | Organizations, such as corporations and governments, are often categorized by their structure. Although a horizontal structure places leaders and followers on an even plane, a vertical structure is hierarchical with central leadership at the top and employees or constituents forming the bottom. Leaders in vertically structured organizations are uniquely challenged to remain approachable and receptive to those at the middle and bottom of the organizational pyramid. In the case of Ancient Rome, the first emperor Augustus deftly adapted to these challenges to maintain his new role and to foster the respect of his subjects. Ultimately, many Romans viewed Augustus as an accessible leader who had both the ability and desire to hear their problems and adjudicate in their best interests. This was noteworthy because Augustus was an absolute ruler who replaced a more democratic form of government, one that valued the privilege of appealing to elected officials or directly to the people. Students will be asked to analyze how Augustus signaled openness and caring and how these efforts were received by others. |
