| Summary: | The case examines a leader's decision making when personal ambition seems to conflict with ethics and business compulsions, presenting the leader with a trilemma. The case focuses on the ambiguities a leader faces when making decisions. It addresses reason-based decision making and the process of decision making that is influenced by individual preferences and the contexts that influence those choices. Vagle, the editor-in-chief of the up and coming English news channel, Prime News, received a call from the secretary of Sule, the owner of the channel. Sule wanted Vagle to go with him to meet someone at a factory site he proposed to buy for his other business. Vagle had set up a successful Marathi news channel (regional news channel) for Sule and in 2013 got the go-ahead to set up Prime News. While conceptualizing it, Vagle had begun to feel that to achieve his vision, he should be the channel's CEO rather than just editor-in-chief. He mentioned this to Sule, who indicated that he was open to the idea. This call to accompany Sule raised questions in Vagle's mind about Sule involving him in his other business deals that might compromise his position as an independent journalist. |
