Due to the different properties of materials at the nanoscale, hopes for industry transformation and innovative applications using nanotechnology are high. At the same time, the level of uncertainty in the field is particularly high due to fast developments, versatile application of nanotechnologies, and a legal framework that is lagging behind technological developments. The concept of responsible innovation is targeted at designing innovation in such a way that society benefits most from it and potential risks are minimized. Applied Nanoparticles SL (AppNPs) was selected for this case because it brings together the highly innovative, yet risk-prone, sector of nanotechnology with the concept of responsible innovation. The case demonstrates how a particular company strategically oriented their business operations toward responsible innovation and how this has affected company structure, employee involvement, transparency, and compliance activities. It gives rise to the question of whether these efforts are worthwhile and requires readers to weigh the benefits and challenges of implementing responsible innovation in the context of a small or medium-sized enterprise. |
