| Summary: | This case focuses on a social initiative taken by Singapore-based social entrepreneur Koh Seng Choon and his determination to uplift differently abled people in the labor market by providing them with dignified earning sources. The case highlights the aspects of the operational model of Dignity Kitchen in relation to the Work Integration Social Enterprise (WISE) model. Following its inception in 2010, Dignity Kitchen employs over 60 people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities, who are given adequate and relevant training to perform jobs assigned to them. Although working with differently abled people might seem like a social cause that gets ample support from financial institutions and governments, the case based in Singapore discusses the various challenges Mr. Choon endured in bringing Dignity Kitchen to where it stands today. His strong passion to bring dignity to differently abled people has helped him break many barriers and establish a novel social enterprise. The entrepreneur is facing an ongoing struggle and dilemma as to whether or not this business model run by differently abled people is a sustainable business solution. The changing perception caused by this paradigm shift of a differently abled working population is not only going to benefit the economy of Singapore but also lead other countries to add a significant population to their labor force who would otherwise be unemployed. |
