| Summary: | At 53 years of age, Margaret found herself unexpectedly very ill. In a heavily sedated post-surgery state, she realized her bowel had emptied onto her hospital bed. As well as feeling sick and fearful of the post-surgery prognosis, Margaret now also felt humiliated. This case is about the intensification of pressure and stress under the conditions of neoliberalism in jurisdictions where this regime is associated with the exacerbation of inequality. The focus of the case is on how blindness to, tolerance of, and complicity in, degrading behavior have become so normalized that the reach and grip of this form of capitalism are barely perceptible as a systemic framing of our lives. The case draws attention to the contradictions of such exploitation with the aspirations of a universal life of dignity proclaimed by the United Nations, their organizational implications generated by the Global Compact (UNGC), and their application through the work of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). In part one of this case, Margaret writes a letter to her sister about a long-suppressed description of a humiliation she experienced as a patient in a world-class hospital. Part two provides an initial debrief of the letter. This debrief is expanded in the Teaching Notes with a discussion of the emerging challenges to neoliberalism and diverse responses to these challenges in the fast-changing global dynamics that impact managers in all types of institutions at all levels of responsibility. |
