| Summary: | This case highlights the inadequacies of the infant and baby formula market from the point of view of two different competitors in the industry: Abbott, the biggest market shareholder, and LullabyFeed, a fictitious start-up. The case opens with a broad overview of the industry, then it highlights the perspective of the market leader, Abbott, and the challenges facing the firm following a recall of its infant formula products and the closing of its facility in Sturgis, Michigan, in February 2022, after reports of bacterial infections in four infants. Students investigate factors that could be potential opportunities to regain customer trust and reduce the likelihood of future product quality issues for Abbott. The second perspective is that of a new market entrant, LullabyFeed, and their seven years of research and development to bring a new (fictional) product to market. The founder of LullabyFeed faces the risk of competing against both industry titans but also against new competitors in the market. One place where the field is leveled is the adverse impacts on both companies' supply chain due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Students will be asked to explore the factors that could pose potential risks to the infant and baby food supply chain from the perspective of both competitors and devise a justification to allocate resources to a supply chain risk management plan, keeping the pandemic in mind. |
