Description
Summary:The study of preindustrial craft and trade guilds can offer insights into the economic functions of institutions providing goods or services within limited markets. As Sheilagh Ogilvie (2014) points out, "[g]uilds are often seen as synonymous with human capital investment, as many of them operated training systems" (p. 181). While there is sufficient historical evidence that some of these training systems were tainted by corruption and human greed propelled by bribes, special interest, and bias (Ogilvie, 2014, p. 182), guilds' individual statutes and ordinances are illustrative of the continued practice of human capital investment recognized by Theodore W. Schultz and Gary S. Becker. This case will examine official documents created by craft and trade guilds in preindustrial Europe in relation to training and internal migration, two significant factors in human capital investment.
