| Summary: | This case study highlights people management and change management processes in the context of an acquisition. The acquiring firm is H&K, a multinational company, and the target firm is Acqua-Lyne Engineering, a local South African irrigation company. The acquisition took place with a shareholder's buyout in 2012 and gradual stock buyout up until 1 January 2017, when H&K formally took over. Acqua-Lyne then became part of H&K South Africa (SA) who reported into H&K International (Int.). At the time of the case, Acqua-Lyne controlled approximately 40% of the irrigation market in South Africa. This case study explores the challenges faced by the Acqua-Lyne staff and management as a result of the acquisition process. The case describes the background to the acquisition, the processes during this phase, and the resultant outcomes experienced by the Acqua-Lyne employees. The chief protagonist in the case, Ian Auberge, is the former co-owner of Acqua-Lyne who now consults part-time to H&K SA. The case encourages students to think about the ramifications that an acquisition process may have on the people within the acquired firm. |
