Description
Summary:Dennis Torbett, head of non-profit Home Builders' Institute, which provides skill training, secured a large federal grant in 2010. He was given 10 million dollars to operate a national at-risk youth mentee program, outside the typical scope of the HBI. To that end, Torbett formed a network of administrative organizations through which he could carry out his mandate. However, Torbett faced a number of issues with compliance, communication, and execution in managing this network. This case provides a look at a complex form of non-profit management, as well as the nature of funding large-scale service organizations.
