| Summary: | In an African country with a very high rate of HIV/AIDS and correspondingly high rate of gender-based violence, Liz and Reggae, two female public health workers seek to mobilize their community to join the social media campaign with the hashtag "#onebillionrising." Leading the community, their positions and networks help them secure local celebrities and many community stakeholders to send out individualized messages that read "I am rising because ..." However, they also experience backlash and resistance to the campaign from the local police chief, a prominent community authority. This case study highlights women's leadership issues surrounding rapport building, community mobilizing, gender identity, and power dynamics of social movement public messaging. Each of these issues is set against a backdrop of gender-based violence and the questions that Liz and Reggae, as community leaders, have about culture and imperialism, sexism, and ethnocentrism. |
