| Summary: | This case provides an overview of the decisions that the Board of Directors (hereafter Board) of an orphanage, Dar As Salaam, must make in response to a new set of laws enacted by the Saudi government. What direction should a local Saudi non-profit take in terms of international collaborations? This question becomes pertinent as the orphanage has been approached by a global child care organization to collaborate on specific projects in the country. The potential partner has specific requirements as part of the conditions for collaborating, such as expanding the number of Board members, including more women on the Board, and changing the Board governance procedures. These requirements are intended to give voice to those who they believe have not yet had much voice. These are big changes for the Board to implement, and they are wary of the pace of these changes, though they agree with them in principle. This case helps students to understand organizational change from a Board governance perspective. |
