Description
Summary:Developing from a longitudinal ethnographic study on queer women's subjectivities in contemporary China, this research methods case study discusses how affective feelings, entanglements, and embodiments can be recognized, traced, and analyzed in an ethnographic study. I first explain briefly how affective dimensions of people's social life and situated knowledge have been underexamined in social sciences and the humanities, and why there is an "affective turn" in theories and methodologies across various research areas emerging recently. Then, I introduce how practical and ethical challenges in my study made me rethink and adjust my original research design, which was supposed to only focus on discourse data and discourse analysis. After that, I illustrate how I combined perspectives and strategies for tracing and analyzing affective information with an ethnographic study. I especially elaborate two methods: (1) paying attention to what has happened before, behind, beside, and beyond well-organized personal narratives and culturally reinforced discourses; (2) practicing autoethnographic writing. Additionally, I share some other practical and ethical lessons I learned from my research process. I expect this case study to be particularly helpful to (future) qualitative social science researchers who are interested in investigating nonnormative genders, sexualities, and intimacies in specifically heteronormative, patriarchal, and homo/bi/transphobic contexts. I also hope that LGBTQ+ readers will find inspirations from this case study.
