| Summary: | This case study explores my doctoral research on second-generation Haitians in The Bahamas in which I conducted semi-structured, open-ended interviews. For this research project, I wanted to understand experiences and negotiations of stigma, belonging, citizenship, and identity among adults of Haitian descent born and/or raised in The Bahamas to Haitian nationals. This case study explores how I navigated my research from the initial dissertation proposal stage through the challenges of conducting qualitative research as a foreigner and outsider in another country. Further, as an Africologist, this case study uses Manning Marable's Black intellectual tradition as a lens for gauging my methodological approach to this research. Through this framework, I explore the gaps in my research that my scholarship is not able to address as well as the need for researchers and scholars to think critically about one's own contribution to the social transformation of society, i.e., the relationship between scholarship and activism. Last, I also discuss the importance of centering historically marginalized voices, allowing their knowledge to guide the analysis, and the need to think critically about the narratives we are (re)producing in our scholarship. |
