Goffman (1922-1982) is often associated with the North American perspective of symbolic interactionism, and the broader tradition of interpretivist sociology, which emphasises the subjective meanings that people give to their experiences. However, he saw himself as more of an empirically grounded observer of social behaviour and was influenced by other disciplines such as anthropology and ethology. As a student of the Chicago School, Goffman was a keen proponent of ethnographic field research methods, especially participant observation and documentary analysis.
