| Summary: | Empiricism is the philosophical position according to which experience is the ultimate source of justification and meaning. It comes in two varieties: belief-empiricism and concept-empiricism. The first variety is epistemological: Beliefs are justified on the basis of experience. The second variety is semantic: Concepts get their meaning on the basis of experience. The two are connected by the principle that meaning is verification, namely, that the meaning of a statement is given by the conditions under which it is verified in experience. Radical empiricism asserts that there is no knowledge independent of experience. Hence, the very idea of a priori knowledge is rejected; even mathematical and logical knowledge is empirical.
