Context (who, what, where, why, how) matters in the design and conduct of interdisciplinary, multicenter, community-based, longitudinal, prospective cohort studies on noncommunicable diseases in Southeast Asia. This case study provides a general overview of the LIFE course study in CARdiovascular disease Epidemiology in which survey and clinical data were collected in four countries (Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand). In particular, it explains how the LIFECARE Philippines research team prepared for the design and conduct of the study among 3,072 apparently healthy adults (20-50 years old) who resided in 62 rural and urban villages in four provinces and one metropolitan area. The challenges of securing funding and dealing with the bureaucracy; preparation of data collection tools; selection of study villages and study participants; and helping ensure diversity and inclusiveness, and continued participation in the baseline and follow-up assessments (5 years apart) were also described. This essay concludes with insights into the practicalities of conducting community-based health research projects and the elements for successful research collaborations from the perspective of a health social scientist and a LIFECARE Philippines co-investigator.
