Description
Summary:In early June 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) captured the city of Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq. In February 2017, as Iraqi and allied forces began to retake the city, the research team for this study began coordinating a response. Of particular interest to public and humanitarian health researchers was the dearth of information on the functioning of ISIS's health care system, and how medical professionals living in Mosul during ISIS occupation had adapted to providing services. Two major methodological concerns for the proposed research were the absence of formative evidence on the topic in the published literature and the need for rapid research mobilization once the city was accessible. Given that little was known on the topic, a qualitative approach was selected, which would allow new theory to emerge. To accommodate the urgency of the timeline, a rapid ethnographic approach was utilized, including free-listing and semi-structured interviewing of health care workers. While recruitment was highly successful, participants were extremely concerned about maintaining anonymity in this post-occupation setting, leading the field team to rely on note-taking rather than audio recordings. While this introduced difficulties in analysis, strong international collaboration and member checking, along with the strengths of rapid ethnographic methods, allowed for significant results to emerge.
