| Summary: | Being followed, touched, harassed. Feeling constant anxiety, distress, and scared for your life, while completely alone. This case study provides an inside look at safety and sexual violence in global health student fieldwork, exploring what happens when the conduct of research clashes with individual safety. It draws from the experience of a White queer woman conducting graduate research in Asia; however, the issues raised here are widespread, and can occur across many differing contexts in the global North and South alike. Gender-based violence and distress faced by global health students in the field, particularly women, has been largely ignored in published literature. In this case study, I will explain my attempts to plan for safety before I left, followed by what ultimately ensued on the ground. I will suggest upstream safety strategies for students to employ, such as prioritizing language fluency, supervisor selection, and traveling in groups. I will also explore factors that make the possibility to leave the field during research incredibly complex, including power dynamics, lack of support, and the need to graduate. Students, researchers, and university departments must work together to provide support for students conducting fieldwork. Allowing a student to leave the field without academic penalty must be not only acceptable, but planned for ahead of time as an option if a student becomes unsafe. |
