| Summary: | This case study provides an insight into the points to consider when applying a participatory methodological approach to health research by uncovering how theoretical, collaboration, and participatory tenets hold up in reality in a research project addressing young Black African female migrants' health needs. This paper is part of an ongoing PhD research study, with the preliminary title In Pursuit of Innovative and Relevant Solutions to Meet the Health Needs of Young Black African Female Migrants in Aotearoa/New Zealand, which focuses on the shared experiences, insights, ideas, and aspirations with the New Zealand health delivery system to inform future policy and initiatives that would improve their health and wellbeing in New Zealand.I provide a brief overview of the research, including the rationale of using an exploratory qualitative methodology informed by African epistemology, a branch of African philosophy based on African ways of knowing, worldview, culture, traditions, interpersonal interactions, and collective ways of working together. Storytelling circles were the data collection method. I describe how I implemented them. I highlight the challenges of methodology and contextual factors that hindered participation and collaboration among the participants. I also acknowledge the barriers and values to enhance the research process and promote inclusion gathered from the participants. This case study is not so much about providing technical fixes that can solve the participatory research challenges, but rather provoke discussions, thoughts, and lessons on how to ensure participatory and collaboration successes that promote the health and wellbeing of young Black African migrant females through appropriate research epistemologies and methodologies in similar study contexts. |
