| Summary: | This case study illustrates our endeavor in expanding the new field of psychiatric neuroimaging by transdisciplinary cross-validation of clinical psychological scales and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This further aims at closing the explanatory gap between psychiatry and neuroscience. This gap is reflected by the theoretical and methodological crisis in psychiatry, which fundamentally lies within the unresolved mind-brain problem and its contemporary interpretation as indicated in the Identity Theory of Mind and the Supervenience Theory of Mind. We have tried to delineate the process of designing and refining an innovative nonconventional fMRI paradigm in the pursuit of implementing translational cross-validation between clinical and neuroimaging methods. Furthermore, we explain the necessity of using multiple creative statistical tools when analyzing compound and unique data sets to obtain reliable and valid results. In addition, we have shared our experience in facing and overcoming a number of unpredicted practical challenges during the implementation of our research project which we hope would be helpful to anyone aspiring to explore the field of neuroscientific research. |
