Description
Summary:Evidence-based medicine provides a robust background for best clinical practices, which are expressed in guidelines. However, evidence evolves continuously, and thus, guidelines have to be updated. The clinical practice offers the advantage of allowing healthcare professionals to observe phenomena or behaviors that cannot be explained by or are not considered in existing guidelines. To fill gaps in guidelines or clinical practice, careful observation of patients against the background of a well-organized clinical setting may inspire original research. The findings of an observational study on the relationship between neuraxial labor analgesia and breastfeeding success, pointing to clinically relevant, truly interdisciplinary birth outcomes, can demonstrate the methodological value, practical difficulties, and drawbacks of including the perspective of all the healthcare professionals involved in a clinical setting when teamwork, endpoints, and the research design need to be planned.
