| Summary: | The case investigated the utilization of survey methodology in the study of faith-based organizations (FBOs) involved in the response to the HIV infection in Nigeria. It focused, therefore, on the examination of purposively selected three FBOs in the response. The study looked at the managerial and technical capacities of these FBOs to function fruitfully in the response. It utilized key informant interviews and the focus group discussions as tools. Participants were recruited from HIV/AIDS committees in these churches who were approached through letters which conveyed the purpose of the study and the assurance of confidentiality for the participants. The tools were administered at times and venues chosen by the respondents, and the research team observed proper entry and exit protocols during the fieldwork. Critical lessons learnt include inter alia the invaluable role of robust tools in survey research; dealing with research errors that affect outcomes; overcoming the observable sanctimonious attitudes of FBOs; and tackling leader bias in FBO research. The case shows the importance of the knowledge of the social context to health research in Africa and the value in utilizing experts in validating research tools in order to ensure both validity and reliability of outcomes. |
