| Summary: | Cultural capital is a central concept in the social sciences and it has proven to be theoretically seminal and empirically inspiring in a variety of fields, including educational studies, cultural studies, and sociology. Over the years, cultural capital has come to cover a whole spectrum of theoretical meanings. Michl̈e Lamont and Annette Lareau's widely cited definition captures its general meaning and significance. They define cultural capital as "institutionalized, i.e. widely shared, high status cultural signals (attitudes, preferences, formal knowledge, behaviors, goods and credentials) used for social and cultural exclusion" (Lamont & Lareau, 1998, p. 156). In this sense, cultural capital refers to an acquired and transposable competence (i.e., a mastery of forms of culture) that simultaneously provides and signals social prestige.
