At one time, it was routinely taken to be a central feature of scientific research and treated as both achievable, a least to some degree, and desirable. However, especially in the second half of the 20th century, with increasing questions being raised about the concept of science itself, objectivity came to be a much more contentious matter. Some argued that it can never be achieved, so that any claim to achieve it is spurious and amounts to ideological disguise for the inevitable value commitments of the researcher, obscuring how these have shaped the process of inquiry.
