Summary:Since the beginnings of modern social science in the 18th and 19th centuries, the social sciences have sought general laws of societylaws that describe how society works at any given moment and how it changes over time. Isaac Newton's laws of motion (e.g., force equals mass times acceleration) were widely taken as the paradigm of good science and thus it is thought that good social science should follow suit and make laws central. This ideal was adopted early in the history of the social sciences and continues to assert considerable influence over contemporary social science practice.
