Summary:Mystical, mythopoetic, supernatural, or magical thought has been a central and enduring issue in the social sciences, but it has not always been fully understood. The problem has been how to address an area of human experience that cannot be accounted for using logical scientific classification and analysis. A pioneer in the study of mystical and magical ways of thinking was French philosopher Lucien Lv̌y-Bruhl (1857-1939), who spent most of his career exploring native mystical mentality in relation to logical scientific thinking. Mystical modes of mind existed largely unexamined in the history of Western thought, until the early 20th century when Lv̌y-Bruhl started formulating his philosophical studies of mystical mentality.
