Description
Summary:This case study is based on the author's MA research, completed in 2019, in which she explored how methadone maintenance treatment clients recovering from opioid addiction communicated about health to elucidate their local meaning-making processes. This research project presented narratives on how methadone maintenance treatment clients made sense of health in the context of treatment and recovery. For this research project, the author adopted a reflexive narrative approach in which she listened to participant narratives through interviews which lasted from 1.5 hr to nearly 4 hr in length. A reflexive narrative approach blends critical interrogation of research design and stages while simultaneously opening-up dialogic spaces with participants to better navigate and honor the methodological concerns of everyone involved in the research process. The goal of this case study is to present and reflect on lessons learned throughout the research process. In particular, the author focuses on the following three areas: (1) the significance and power of reflexive narrative in the context of stigmatized identities, (2) the methodological challenges with vulnerable populations, and (3) the value in becoming a volunteer member alongside research projects of sensitive nature. The case study concludes with practical lessons learned for researchers pursuing similar topic areas.
