Description
Summary:In this research method case, I report a qualitative study on interaction in health promotion groups. The study was a part of my PhD in social psychology, and it was conducted in collaboration with the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. Using discursive psychology as a method, we focused on how group members talk about their experiences of health behavior change. In the study, we described a specific practice of interaction "comparative time-framed experience telling" or in short, "stories of change" (in which group members support or challenge each other's stances), and thus showed how peer support may unfold in group discussions. The study adds to the understanding of what kind of resource group interaction may be with regard to the institutional aims of health promotion groups. We analyzed video data that was gathered in two health promotion interventions that were developed and organized by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. The use of secondary data and the sharing of resources among research team were essential factors without which this study would not have been possible. The research approach, discursive psychology, addresses verbal practices participants use to produce and manage their social actions in discussions. This approach takes into account the immediate sequential context in which verbal practices take place in the flow of discussion. In addition, it pays attention to wider institutional and cultural context. Therefore, it is a suitable approach to study complex interactional environments, which include medical and health care contexts and health promotion groups.
