Description
Summary:This case study provides insight into the use of semi-structured interviews by discussing the design, practicalities, and ethical considerations of a study conducted as part of the CODEMISUSED collaboration. In the case study, we demonstrate how semi-structured interviews conducted with 28 adults (15 females and 13 males) who had misused codeine-containing pain medicines generated "thick descriptions" of a social phenomenon and offered access to the personal experiences of the study participants. We highlight key aspects of the data collection, discuss barriers to conducting research with people who misuse opioid medication, and provide examples of ethical considerations we as researchers had to address in planning and conducting the semi-structured interviews with people who were dependent on codeine.
