Description
Summary:Autoethnography is a methodology that allows an individual to reflect upon personal experiences, explore personal relationships, evaluate one's own behaviors, and convey those items through written narrative. It is a powerful way to develop deep, insightful data within an organization or subculture in which the author belongs. My experience in writing an autoethnography about the development and maintenance of social identity within a motorcycle club showed me that autoethnographic research is personal and challenging. I had to reflect upon my successes and face my failures. Furthermore, I had to address challenges of bias, subjectivity, and questions about the academic rigor of the study. Based on my experiences and those of other authors, I have found autoethnography to be extremely effective in leadership studies and evaluating leadership experiences. This case introduces readers to the use of personal reflection, self-analysis, and other qualitative data collection methods. In addition, readers are exposed to writing a personal narrative based on the themes developed from their data.
