| Summary: | The relationship between justice perceptions and civil war peace agreements seems intuitive, but datasets did not exist to systematically evaluate it prior to our study. We review the steps we took to construct a dataset to address the question of whether justice plays a role in the implementation of signed peace agreements, from developing a stratified random sample of 50 peace agreement cases to coding the cases. After identifying hypotheses to explore the relationship, we performed statistical analyses in the framework of a mixed model design. One model is based on multiple regression with control variables and is referred to by us as a vertical model. Another model is based on statistical mediation. It entails an assessment of indirect effects and is referred to as a horizontal model. Analyses based on the vertical model show how justice operates in the context of a conflict environment. Analyses based on the horizontal model show the germinating influence of adherence to justice principles during negotiation and in the outcome. The results obtained from our analyses provide insights into terminating civil wars as well as into the development and sustenance of a culture of peace: The way negotiators treat each other has lasting effects on their post-negotiation interactions. Among the lessons we share are the importance of selecting a representative sampling of cases from different regions and time periods, to develop generalizable results, and to strive for rigorous evaluations of hypotheses with the most up-to-date models and powerful statistical techniques. |
