| Summary: | Protest events are fluid and ephemeral, often leaving little record outside the experiences of those taking part or observing. Event analysis provides an opportunity to recover the range and scale of such events in a more systematic manner, as a useful complement for information gathered through qualitative methods. The research described in this case report used protest event analysis to develop an overview of environmental activism in New Zealand. This case report outlines the decisions and tasks required in gathering data and building the event catalog. It also highlights the challenges involved in such an endeavor that should be considered in the planning stages. Although this case focuses on protest event analysis, the underlying method can be deployed across a range of data types and issues to unearth patterns over time. |
