Description
Summary:Have you ever volunteered to be in a research study? Perhaps you have completed a survey from an academic or research institution or participated in a focus group? If so, you probably provided your informed consent. But, have you ever thought about your social media posts or cell phone data being mined and used in research without your knowledge? How would you feel about that? In this guide, I will introduce readers to basic ethical principles guiding online research and how ethical reflection and decision-making play a role in our methodological decisions. Here, 'online research' will be used as a broad category that encompasses a wide range of activities and is not discipline-specific. Sometimes called 'internet research', online research includes activities such as surveys, focus groups or interviews, content analyses of online data, virtual experiments, cyber-ethnographies, big data analyses, and mobile and wearables-based research. New forms of online research should be expected as technological developments continue. We will look at traditional ethical principles and consider how these may or may not apply in online research and conclude with reflections and recommendations for online research ethics and integrity. This entry will not discuss specific legal or regulatory requirements directly.
