| Summary: | This case study looks at two different approaches to analyzing linguistic data pulled from a database of publicly available last statements from death row. The database is created by state officials and uses different recording methods based on who is transcribing the statements, and therefore, care must be taken in selecting data. This data is used to create a dataset for two separate studies, each examining a different linguistic theme present in these last statements: (1) death penalty rhetoric and (2) apology and forgiveness. This case study compares and contrasts the two methodological approaches used for each of the studies: one using multiple raters and one using a single rater to identify these themes. This case study will serve to delve deeper into dataset design and encourage students to create sturdy methodological approaches to their data. |
