Description
Summary:This How-to Guide speaks to the methodological issues of using social media in the doing of social scientific research. This covers a range of issues that should be considered to inform and steer methodological thinking in this space, including social media platforms themselves and the usage practices that we find on them, and the tools and analytical frameworks that we might bring to them. What this guide hopes to encourage is a 'mindset' for thinking about social media methods to meet the demands of a research subject (i.e., social media and its users) which resists definition and bullet-point instructional guidance owing to its inherent tendency to constantly shift and evolve. This is done through relating the local specific methodological issues of projects undertaken by myself, both to exemplify the issues at hand and provide a model for readers to follow in terms of thinking and writing about their own social media research projects.
