Digital technologies, particularly smartphones and wearable devices, have greatly facilitated the uptake of intensive longitudinal methods in recent decades and have vastly expanded the scope of self-report and behavioral data that is possible to collect. This How-to Guide provides an overview of the various types of survey designs that fall under the umbrella of intensive longitudinal survey design, such as experience sampling, ecological momentary assessment, ambulatory assessment, and diary methods. It provides guidance on the types of research questions that are well suited for intensive longitudinal survey methods and highlights some of the key strengths and limitations of intensive longitudinal designs compared to cross-sectional and more traditional longitudinal survey designs. The guide also provides a host of practical guidance on key considerations in the design and fielding of intensive longitudinal surveys. Finally, it provides several examples of recent studies employing intensive longitudinal methods and of knowledge gained from this research.
