He devised "philosophical hermeneutics," an elaborate account of the ways all our understanding of the world draw upon pre-existing engagements, which are linguistic in nature. He challenged a view, dominant in the modern age, that certain knowledge derives from the methodological procedures of a knowing subject. Gadamer's achievement was principally to construct a philosophical defence of the claims of the human sciences by presenting a hermeneutical account of knowledge and challenging the positivist legacy of Enlightenment thought.
