| Summary: | If "traditional" longitudinal data is having more than one observation per person, intensive longitudinal data (ILD) is having many observations per person, often collected within relatively short timeframes (e.g., every 20 minutes, every few hours over 1-2 weeks). Digital technologies including mobile phone-based surveys and wearable biosensors generate ILD. Such data provides an abundance of information and offers both a challenge and opportunity for analysts. Here I discuss central considerations for the ILD analyst and provide a brief introductory How-to Guide for the analysis of ILD. The reader will learn the central "features" of ILD, including (1) the contrast of between- and within-person effects and its (2) temporal patterning. These features will be addressed with various multilevel models and will finish with the application of time-varying effect modeling to explore time-varying associations. This guide is accompanied by supplementary code in R (https://www.r-project.org/) to facilitate the reader's analysis of their own ILD, available in the further resource section. |
