A distinguished professor of folklore and ethnomusicology at Indiana University, she introduced the methodology of European ethnology into an American context. She is largely responsible for the flowering of scholarly interest in contemporary legends in the United States and also led the way in establishing the study of ethnic folklore as an important part of American folklore studies.
