| Summary: | Jack D. Douglas (1937-) represents the cohort of contemporary sociologists who have influenced the development of the qualitative research paradigm. In more than 20 books and numerous articles, he elaborates the original approach of existential sociology, which integrated perspectives of ethnomethodology, phenomenology, symbolic interactionism, dramaturgy, and the sociology of everyday life. His inductive methodology asserts a research strategy that starts from specific first-person experience of daily social practices and develops toward investigation of wider transsituational parameters of interactions. Douglas applies his own existential methodology to the empirical analysis of suicide, deviance, intimate relations, subcultures, and social order. He proposes certain innovative qualitative techniques of creative interviewing, life studies, and team field research.
