| Summary: | Patronage and clientelism are systemically organised personal relationships between pairs of unequal individual people. They are ostensibly voluntary and personal, but in systems characterised by widespread presence of patron-client networks, it is untenable to convincingly argue that one could opt out without an extremely high cost. The study of patronage and clientelism has generated important research methods, but these results must be understood as firmly embedded within the theoretical developments that arose to address complex, changing ethnographic fields. In the period following World War II, anthropologists moved away from small-scale, so-called tribal societies and branched into more pluralist social settings.
