| Summary: | This case study considers how two of our MSc in Public Health and Health Promotion students, Mindy Grewal and Sharon Underwood, developed and used qualitative vignettes (short stories and scenarios) to research two very different issues within their MSc dissertations. Diane and Louise were their supervisors, respectively. One dissertation was a process evaluation of a health literacy training course delivered in Mirpuri, Pakistan, to prepare women about the services of the National Health Service and key health issues prior to their emigration to the United Kingdom. The other examined parental supply of alcohol to under-age teenagers within "middle class" families. Both dissertations used vignettes to generate discussion within the context of face-to-face in-depth qualitative interviews with Pakistani women and parents, respectively. In this case study, we consider what vignettes are, when they can be used, what they can add to the qualitative data-making process, and, finally, how they can be constructed. We have integrated the lessons learnt about using vignettes throughout the case. We use examples from both dissertations to illuminate our points and aim to bring the student researcher perspective to the data collection processes. |
