Description
Summary:Early psychosis intervention hinges on the accurate detection and prediction of incipient (future) schizophrenia. Qualitative longitudinal research in Europe concludes that subjective, experience-based approaches to detection are more successful in identifying incipient schizophrenia than biomedical approaches. In this case, I describe the development of a unique hermeneutics mixed-methods research design to explore and validate the utility and clinical reasoning of an arts-based evaluation tool (the Azima Battery) with individuals in early psychosis. Hermeneutics is a philosophical practice of interpretation that can be used to integrate the findings from multiple methods. In this case, I define, illustrate, and justify the development of a hermeneutic approach to mixing multiple methods, highlight challenges that I met at the level of data analysis, and propose strategies that helped me develop a rigorous final overarching synthesis in this mixed-methods study. Hermeneutic mixed methods was a useful approach to address my research aims of both predicting and understanding an arts-based assessment in health care that is intersubjective, involves clinical reasoning, and that also hinges on my experiences as a researcher who is both observing and participating in the phenomenon of interest.
