Summary:Indexicality is a term used in philosophy, semiotics, and linguistics to describe how the meaning of a communicative action depends upon the circumstances in which it is produced and understood. Indexical expressions are particular words, phrases, or entire utterances, such as "here," "today," "you," "over there," "it's on the top shelf," which rely on the immediate context of use. The particular referent of such expressions depends on who is speaking, who they are speaking to, the immediate time and place, and many other contingencies in the immediate situation. Less obviously, indexicality also is relevant to the immediate sense of virtually any linguistic and nonlinguistic sign, gesture, or other expression, whether or not it is specifically classified as an indexical expression.
