Description
Summary:The study we performed was a retrospective cohort study using the Wellstar Electronic Medical Records system. We investigated whether smoking accelerates to progression to cervical precancer or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 in cigarette smokers versus nonsmokers. We collected data on all patients over the span of 2 years, from 2015 to 2017 who were diagnosed with cervical precancer. We looked at the date of their first abnormal pap smear and the date when they were diagnosed with cervical precancer. We separated them into smokers and nonsmokers and further divided the smokers into whether they smoked less than one pack per day or greater than one pack per day. We also looked at their age and body mass index. What we found was that smoking did accelerate the time to being diagnosed with cervical precancer compared with nonsmokers. What this tells us clinically is that we need to screen women who smoke for cervical cancer more vigilantly and further encourage smoking cessation in our patients to reduce the risk of cervical cancer.
