He made substantial contributions to biology, architecture, and urban planning, in both Britain and the United States, yet he is today all but unknown. His approach to sociology and its methods was challenged and superseded by the ideas of Leonard Hobhouse at the London School of Economicsideas that became the mainstream of sociological thought for many years until the growth in interest and influence of French, German, and American sociological ideas.
