| Summary: | Informal caregivers play an integral part in the management of the progressive neurological disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as motor neuron disease). The objective of this study was to explore the illness journey from the perspective of a cohort of informal caregivers in Ireland. The aim of the study was to inform supports for caregiving across an uncertain and stressful period in caregivers' lives, and how caregivers cope with the challenges.A reference group of health professionals involved in the care of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, along with current and former caregivers, advised on the approach and on topic areas to include when collecting qualitative data from participants. As part of a regular clinical home assessment of the patient, we interviewed their caregivers, and collected information on demographic factors such as age, gender, relationship to patient, and qualitative data concerning their caregiving experiences from open-ended questions. We used different types of data to answer the research questions for a holistic overview of that time period. Asking caregivers about the difficulties they were encountering allowed us to better understand the illness experience from their perspectives. This case study provides an overview of our experiences undertaking face-to-face semi-structured interviews. In particular, we address some of the challenges of collecting qualitative data from interviews with a vulnerable population. |
